Morning Gift

Morning Gift, May 1st
Warm, wet. Moist, moody. Peaceful path through the woods.
Words that describe my first walk in the woods on this the 1st day of May. More often than not we arrange our day by the priorities we think we need to accomplish. I am most often guilty of taking my second cup of morning coffee with a quick look at e-mail, the day then just evaporates into its regular path.
What made today different? Perhaps it was sleeping with the window wide open so we could listen to the welcoming rains that came again during the night. The breezes were strong enough to awaken our senses of the day to come. First light showed the gray of morning clouds, then blue sky and the rising sun. Today was different; so I chose to take my second cup of coffee and take a walk.
Moose joined me and we headed towards the nature trail. We had spent considerable time last fall cleaning ‘dead wood’ and removing the debris the beaver had hauled into the bay shore ; it would be interesting to see what changes Mother Nature had brought during the change of seasons.
The moisture hangs in the woods on mornings like this; you brush a branch and the soft sprinkle of dew falls so gently. The wood is wet ... the smell is of moisture; such a wonderful change from the dryness of the past month. Mosses so green, glistening in the sunlight that is reaching through the trees to the forest floor. Then the call of the loon and all was perfect.
I knew I was lucky ... this was a gift ... mine for the taking and enjoying.
Soon we’ll share mornings like this with our wonderful guests who I hope will take their morning coffee and take to the woods.
Happy May Day !
