Memorial Day Moose Sighting
Yes, it’s finally happened....Burntside guests’ Gail Solstad and Mike McClure , saw a baby moose as they were driving into Ely from Burntside on Monday about 2 in the afternoon. The moose was simply standing along the side of the road....Gail and Mike were not initially certain what they were seeing; but slowed down and had a stare down with the dark brown, burgundy colored baby moose.
Described as being quite tall and awkward with the brown nose and long gangly legs, he clomped across the road to disappear.
It seems everyone wants to see a moose when in the Ely area and the most predictable sightings are on twisty, curvy Highway # 1 on your way to Isabella. This was an exciting, memorable day. It will be interesting this summer to see if anyone else has sightings of this moose and we, of course, wonder if mom was near by watching this intent youngster take to the roads.
We’ve watched the eagle land on the rock island off of the lodge. He (presuming the sex) delighted guests in Cabin s# 26 and 2 as he flew directly in front of their cabin windows a week ago. I looked up in the sky later in the week to catch a quick glimpse of an eagle and crow flying near each other. Even saw a lone little fox appear down the road one evening last week when I was planting flowers.
First bloom of the Japanese Tree Peony as well as clematis opened early with the premature sunny warm days of May. Temperatures cooled down on Sunday evening giving reason to snuggle into the blanket for a cooler early summer night. A fire burns in the fireplace this afternoon with the scent just lightly permeating the cool air.
The first big weekend of the summer is now behind us; the restaurant launched the new season with several new entrees and many of the favorites from seasons past. It is once again time for summer at the lake.
Welcome back to Burntside.
